MoMo Monster Editorial Illustration

St. Louis Magazine editorial illustration done for an article about a Missouri monster legend that is being turned into a movie. The Return of Momo brings the state’s one-time famous monster back to life with a new, low-budget horror flick. Momo the Monster was a mysterious hairy biped spotted near the town of Louisiana, MO in 1972. “It looked like a Bigfoot-type creature with a pumpkin-shaped head,” explains Johnno Zee, the writer/producer/director of Momo: The Missouri Monster, a horror-spoof film. Zee pays tribute to the monster’s enduring mystery with what he’s calling a “small-budget, B-movie grindhouse type of movie” featuring “Momo being pursued by a cryptozoologist Elvis impersonator.

Always a pleasure when these types of assignments show up. Here’s the original message from the art director at STL Mag... “This struck me as a topic you would be particularly good at illustrating as you generally draw lovely monsters and imagined creatures.”

Yup, it's true. RTD is finally leaving the U.S. of A. (just temporarily though). Renegade Craft Fair has gone global and RTD is joining them. New Editorial Illustration For Baltimore Magazine

Here’s a recent editorial illustration created for an article on home delivery and the midwives that assist the process in this months issue of Baltimore Magazine. The idea was to convey a newborn image within a home environment and not the typical sterile hospital scene. You can check out the full article here.

I do continue to be randomly surprised by the twists and turns that projects take me through on this never-ending rabbit hole of a profession. One day I’m dabbling in technology, another I’m drawing creatures for fast food chains, and then I’m off to doing research on home birthing... never can predict what’s gonna pop up over at the good ol’ inbox next.

Editorial Illustration For STL Magazine

Editorial illustration done for an article titled, "Midwestern Decency Is for Losers." It was a piece that went on to tell the story of editor Steve Friedman's journey from St. Louis to New York promoting his new memoir Lost on Treasure Island. There was a lot of colorful dialogue and text in the story. One prominent points was a lime green suit that Friedman buys under poor lighting conditions with the assumption that it is gray. The actual color isn't realized (to his horror) until he's walking down the streets of NYC and a mime begins mocking him during his interview lunch with GQ magazine.

As for the caterpillar reference... Friedman continuously illustrates himself through disempowering phrases his entire life, "I don't know," "I'm not sure," "I'll think about it," etc. He goes on to compare himself to a wily moth caterpillar as well. When he makes a failed attempt to return the lime green suit at Dillard's department store (altered suits are non-refundable), he begins repeating over and over in his head, "I am not a moth caterpillar, I am not a moth caterpillar." He then decides to use his new position he's just accepted as senior editor of GQ magazine to threaten the sales lady for being deceptive and selling him a gray suit that was actually lime green (not mentioning that he thought it was gray too). He tells her of his position and threatens to review the store's return policy and quote her name within the article. The scene ends with her writing him a refund voucher.

Initially, visuals for this story were a little hard to nail down because there was so much material to pull from. After discussing some of the lines from the story that I was drawn to with the art director this was where the final ended up. Strange and bizarre...just how I like it.

Editorial Illustrations For Utne Reader On Narcissism

Several editorial illustrations done for the May-June 2011 issue of UTNE Reader. These were done for a bundle of stories around the subject of narcissism.

Half page, opener for "The Culture of Narcissism" - playing off the idea of thinking you are the center of the universe.

"The Narcissism Myth" - this one revolves around the subject of young people and their need for outside validation (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc.) being rooted in their own insecurity.

"Just Do It" - the focus on this discussion was about self-improvement, self-help books, obsession with being the best we can be, and the power of positive thinking. More or less poking fun at this stuff.

"Whatever Happened to Empathy" - explored how much we've lost our ability to empathize with others, walk in other people's shoes, etc.

"Narcissus Regards a Book" - People want to read about themselves and what they're into, not great literature.

Album design - Foster McGinty: Chateau Fiasco

Album design and illustration for Foster McGinty's new album Chateau Fiasco.

Having designed his first album Peach Red a couple years back. I wanted to continue the evolution of that style on this one, incorporating a similar bizarre and surreal flavor with the same illustrative approach.

The title provided a nice foundation of word play to begin drawing inspiration from. Bringing down the house via a good ol' seafaring cephalopod was where things ultimately ended up. The music was a nice evolution from the first album as well. I definitely recommend checking it out and I hope you dig the cover too.

One of my illustrations, Mustache On My Mind, has been selected to appear in the American Illustration 30 annual. I've been included in the online gallery for the past couple years, but this is a first for making it into the book.

I'm honored to know that this years jury included Nicholas Blechman, The New York Times Book Review; Rachael Cole, Schwartz & Wade Books; Michael Ian Kaye, Mother New York; Todd Oldham, Todd Oldham Studio; D.W. Pine III, TIME; David Saylor, Scholastic Inc. and Dean Sebring, Worth. More than 7,000 images were entered by over 1,100 illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers and schools. The jury selected, by a majority vote or better, only 316 images to appear in the book and represent the best illustrations from 2010. AI30 will be printed in full color and distributed worldwide in hardcover immediately after The Party, November 10, 2011. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at that too! Congratulations to all the other illustrators that made it in this year as well!

Behind the Scenes of TED

I love getting sucked into the TED vortex on a rainy day here in NYC. Which is exactly what happened yesterday. I actually came across a couple great behind the scenes videos over on the iso50 blog. What started off as the typical dose of TED inspiration, unfolded quickly into a very surreal experience.

Raghava who was part of the 2010 TED conference and can be seen in the second behind the scenes video above, was actually my roommate while I was studying animation at Parsons during the summer of 2001. This was my first taste of NYC living. We were housed in a tiny bunk-loft-style room above the Blue Water Grill in Union Square with no air conditioning and jack-hammering road construction that took place late at night all summer long. He and I unfortunately lost touch after Parsons, but after seeing his talk, and realizing that the New York City tractor beam had ironically pulled us both back to the island, I tracked him down and we are now planning to get reacquainted soon.

We both have passion for inspiring and working with kids, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this conversation evolves. You can read more about Raghava on his website raghavakk.com

Tales From the Sea... New Advertising Illustration Work For McDonalds Filet-O-Fish

Had the opportunity to work up some illustrations with Hoffman | Lewis for their McDonalds filet-o-fish "Tales From the Sea" campaign a few weeks ago. This one was a little tricky since there was only one week to work up sketches, get approval, and complete final artwork before poppin' these up in the air. Everyone over at Hoffman | Lewis was great though, and really helped streamline the process. These are only being used for a St. Louis, MO metro campaign though (not national unfortunately). So if you're in the STL keep eye out and see if you can spot all five!

Editorial Illustration - Utne Reader: Debtors Anonymous

This was an editorial illustration done for Utne Reader's March-April issue for an article on the Debtors Anonymous organization. Debtors Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from compulsive debting. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop incurring unsecured debt.

The final illustration drew inspiration from part of the article that focused on the emotion that DA is fighting, "when one tries to cover up shame or acts unconsciously with money, looking to get unmet needs satisfied."

This assignment was an interesting one, not necessarily due to the article, but the conditions in which I delivered the initial concepts to Stephanie over at Utne.

I was flying back to NYC a couple days before the concept sketches were due(thinking I had plenty of time still) with a layover in Charlotte, NC. This layover just so happened to coincide with their big ice-storm-freak-out-end-of-days-debauchery that took place there this winter. I actually made it on my connecting flight and was in the plane on the runway when the captain informed us that the airport had run out of de-icer and all remaining flights had been canceled for the night. By the time I got a flight rebooked, all the hotels were sold out for the night. Myself and thousands of other humans were then left to fend for ourselves for the night at an "airport lock-in."

Long story short, one canceled flight evolved to a total of nine canceled flights over the course of three days. I was actually traveling without my portable scanner(Canon LiDE200 Color Image Scanner) too, but fortunately had my iPhone and was able to take photos of my sketches and prepare them for sending. My iPhone actually worked just as well as a scanner for this purpose since sketches don't need to be really high quality at this stage. On the due date for concept sketches everything was sent off on time from my makeshift airport shelter, Steph never knew the difference, and I was saved by my portable studio once again. Another reason why I love and embrace the freedom and mobility that constantly evolving technology gives humans and their businesses.

Editorial Illustration - Tennis Magazine: Stress Test

They actually contacted me about a concept sketch that I had done from the last assignment and thought that the idea behind it would translate well for The Pursuit Of Happiness issue. Win-win. So with a few modifications to the original concept this is the final editorial illustration that ran in January. Another reason why it's always a good idea to submit several concepts to your art directors fellow illustrators!

Utne Reader Illustrated Blog Series

One of my favorite commissioners of editorial illustration, Stephanie Glaros of Utne Reader, has recently started an ongoing Utne Reader Illustrated blog series. Making herself that much cooler now in the illustration world, and giving the readers some insight about the editorial illustration process that goes on behind the scenes. She just featured a recent illustration that her and I worked on together about retirement. You can check out the article here: Utne Reader Illustrated: Jesse Kuhn.

Utne Reader has really been influential in my career as an illustrator so far. I’ve had the opportunity to work on many articles with Stephanie over the past couple years. It’s where good ol’ Greetings From Mr. Bird got his birth certificate, which went on to win awards in AI 29 and CQ 17, and has also been cloned and hung on the walls of many homes now throughout the world as limited edition illustration art prints.

So many other illustrators that I admire have contributed work to the magazine over the years; several of whom are mentioned on Utne’s website. Since its inception in 1984, Utne Reader has relied on talented artists to create original images for stories that express powerful emotions, brilliant new ideas, and humorous storytelling. Browsing through back issues of Utne Reader is like a tour of “Who’s Who” in the illustration world. Artists like Gary Baseman, Brad Holland, Anita Kunz, Bill Plympton, and Seymour Chwast have graced our pages over the years, to name just a few.

My life as an illustrator is still in it’s infancy and I’m really grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given by people like Stephanie. It was only three years ago that I left an unfulfilling design-monkey desk job in the midwest with dreams of New York City and a desire to do something different. I had always really wanted to be a full-time illustrator. To get to wake up everyday and draw. No more clocking in and clocking out. No more Monday morning status meetings. Someone who actually gets paid to think—and draw—for a living... what a concept :)

Did Kohl’s Ever Really Care?

It has been well over three months since the Kohl’s Cares Facebook competition ended. It was the competition where I teamed up with a very deserving neighborhood school, East Side Community High, to help raise awareness about their participation. School started shortly after the competition ended for ESCHS and things in my life went back to business as usual. Many of you who generously supported these kids continue to inquire about the final results, and unfortunately, there still are not any (that myself or ESCHS are aware of). Kohl’s has stayed very quiet and little is currently known as to what they are even doing. Many wonder if the whole competition was just some publicity scam for Kohl’s. One school has even gone as far as suing Kohl’s - Florida school suing over Kohl’s Cares contest. I can’t say I blame them for being a little upset. Many people devoted a lot of time, energy, and resources helping kids all over the United States participate in a contest with some pretty large promises made by Kohl’s. All of that has now vanished. Even the original contest page has been deleted by Kohl’s - http://apps.facebook.com/KohlsCares. Weird right? Funny too that part of that page forced you to “LIKE” the Kohl’s Facebook page in order to vote for a school; gaining Kohl’s millions of dollars worth of publicity when the voting ended. Then they quickly shut their doors with a smile, and have left all of the kids out in the cold; still dreaming about their chances of winning. Nice. Real nice.

There is some other news though (that I’m glad to share). I recently received an email from ESCHS and it looks like all of this has inspired them to march forward with or without the empty promises of Kohl’s. Here’s the letter I received from Mark Federman, the principle of East Side Community High School.

Dear Students, Families, Staff, Alumni, Neighbors and Friends of East Side:

Many of you supported East Side during the Kohl’s Cares contest and have been asking, What happened? Please continue reading to find out and to learn what East Side has decided to do about it and how you can help.

It is great to see the country finally talking about education, thanks to the new movie Waiting for Superman. In a country where public schools are often failing our most “at-risk” kids and families, East Side has been a beacon of light, demonstrating to the city and the country that public schools, if done right, can work for our students. Unfortunately, in these tough economic times it is becoming more and more difficult for East Side to provide our students with the much needed access to resources and experiences that broaden their interests, develop their talents and increase their cultural capital - things that many of their peers in wealthier districts or private schools often take for granted.

We hoped winning the Kohl’s Cares Facebook Contest would help us with these much-needed resources. (East Villager Article). It’s been 3 months since the Kohl’s contest ended and to our knowledge no formal winners have been announced, however several have been disqualified. East Side took great pride in making it to #26 and receiving more votes and support than any other urban public school in the entire country.

We may not have won the money, but we once again came together as a community to show the city, the country and the world what a special place East Side is. We are a community made up of incredible young people, exceptional families, extraordinary educators, loyal alumni and dear friends, old and new.

Many of you have been emailing, calling and asking, "What’s next?" and, "How can we help? We put our heads together and realized we came very close to winning the $500,000 and imagined the amazing and transformational possibilities $500,000 would do for the students of East Side: update our technology, maintain our arts and music programs, bring back our drama program, build a gym and expand our college readiness program. We decided WE MUST GET THE $500K ANYWAY!!!!!!

Therefore, East Side Community High School is launching our $500K Anyway campaign. We are committed to raise the half million dollars for our students by the end of the next school year (June 2012). We did not become one of the most successful urban schools in the country by waiting for Superman (or Kohl’s), we did it through incredible teachers and teaching, collaboration, innovation, hard and smart work, a belief in our kids and their families and most importantly, community.

Therefore, we ask you, our friends and community members, to join us and support our students by going to Friends of East Side - Support East Side Students to learn how you can help in your own little or big way. WE ARE NOT WAITING FOR SUPERMAN!

Editorial Illustration For Library Journal - Taming the eReader

This was an editorial illustration done recently for the cover of Library Journal. The issue was expanding on their recent ebook summit where they hosted their first-ever virtual summit on ebooks. It was an all-day think tank with sessions, commentary on ebooks, their future, how libraries have to deal with them, and what to expect. After speaking with the art director, conceptually we thought librarians trying to rope down an ebook (taking some inspiration from Gulliver's Travels) to represent the challenge libraries will have with getting some control over ebooks in the very near future would make for a compelling cover image. It was a fun cover illustration to work on and Kevin was great to work with over at Library Journal.

Dots Not Feathers Album design

Just finally got my hands on a copy of the Dots Not Feathers: A Thousand Novels album. These guys were great to work with and it was a real pleasure immersing my noggin in their sound for several days as I worked out concepts for the design.

As I was sketching out ideas during the concepting process I thought it would be really cool to connect the “dots” language visually with braille. Getting at the idea that you really do connect with and feel their music. Unfortunately the turnaround was superfast on this and we had very little time for printing, so embossing wasn't an option this go around, but it is on the radar for the next print run. So stay tuned!

Pamona College: Getting In To Google - Editorial Illustration

This was a full page illustration done recently for Pamona College. The story was about the hiring process at Google and the man in charge of that process, Laszlo Bock. He is the vice president of people operations at Google and Pamona alum. Bock is the guy who runs the intricate, data-intensive process by which Google picks its Googlers.

When Mark Kendall from the magazine contacted me they were looking for something fun and conceptual that portrays the idea of job-seekers trying to land gigs at Google. After having that discussion the battle to the search box felt like a natural direction to go.

This event spotlights over 100 of the best local New York artists and craftspeople vending their own unique jewelry, pottery, clothing, fine art and other handmade goods. Visitors to the fair will enjoy the opportunity to converse with artists about their creative processes while shopping for one of a kind items.

This event is run in conjunction with PS 11's annual FALL FESTIVAL – an indoor event that includes food, arts and crafts, bouncy castles, games and a petting zoo for New York City children. Last year this event drew record crowds and helped to fund arts programs for the students of PS 11.

Wall Street Journal

This was a piece done for the WSJ, for an article on a new long-term care perk that may help defray personal costs called the CLASS Act (Community Living Assistance Services and Supports). It printed pretty small 1.75" x 2.5" - so it needed to be simple and easy to read. The turnaround was a little crazy too, and really forces you to think quickly and crank out ideas. Unfortunately some of the more conceptual sketches that were sent over first got the ax and the editor wanted something with a pile of moolah in it, which led to the final above...

A Thank You From East Side High

It's been a busy week! I know many of you are waiting to hear the final results of last weeks Kohls Cares promotion when you helped vote for a very deserving Manhattan public school, East Side Community High. While the results are not in yet officially from Kohls I did want to post the thank you letter that East Side High sent out along with suggested action and next steps. Many of you had generously expressed interest in helping the school out through other means and connections that you have via email, the contact info for who to speak to at ESCH for that is at the end of the note.

A thank you was posted on the blog last week from myself before the contest officially ended, but thank you all so much again! RTD ended up with well over 400 prints to sign and ship out! And many many others also voted, but declined the offer. Your free prints are currently being organized by all of the RTD worker knomes back at the lab and should ship out in a couple weeks once I get back from being on the road. Also if you are in the Chicago area this weekend and would like to pick yours up at the Renegade Craft Fair (booth 210) you are more than welcome to do so and I'll check you off the list.

Dear Students, Families, Staff, Alumni and Friends of East Side:

As September 3rd and the Kohl’s Facebook Contest comes to a close and we pack up Twelfth Street Tent Town after 11 long nights and many days of fighting for our deserving kids and community, I cannot thank you enough for your incredible support. Although it looks like we will not break into the top 20, we will not know who won for a few days. Kohl’s needs to make sure that all of the top 20 schools are in compliance with the contest rules. Disturbingly, there are no urban public schools or schools serving a diverse population in the top 30. We hope that Kohl’s recognizes the unfortunate reality and inequity of the competition and reaches out to support some more deserving schools on the list.

We know and take great pride that we made it to # 32!!! (up from #99 2 weeks ago.) We received more votes and support than any other urban public school in the entire country!!! Unfortunately, the majority of the schools in front of us have advantages and resources we just don’t have. They were able to raffle off IPads in exchange for votes, tap into international online religious networks and utilize additional resources afforded to wealthier communities.

We may not win the money, but we have accomplished something just as valuable. We have once again come together as a community to show the city, the country and the world what a special place East Side is. We are a community made up of, incredible young people, exceptional families, extraordinary educators, loyal alumni and dear friends, old and new. It has been nothing but an inspiration to see all of you coming out to show your support. You have been canvassing the streets, educating community members about our school, networking online hour after hour— day after day, rallying, and selflessly fighting for our young people to have what should be rightfully theirs; equal access and resources.

Your support and work on behalf of the students of East Side has created an incredible interest in our school. Several individuals have reached out wanting to volunteer time, share resources, and provide in-kind and cash donations.

The grueling part of this is over, but no matter what happens with the contest, we will continue to fight for our students and our school. Many of you have asked what’s next? The following are a few ways you can continue to support East Side and urban public schools in this contest and beyond.

Renegade Craft Fair Chicago

Whoohooo! Here we go again... RTD is packin the mule and headin off to the windy city. We're just a few days away from the annual Renegade Craft Fair Chicago!

Bring your own eyeballs and bring your friends eyeballs too! The 8th Annual Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago will be held on September 11 + 12, 2010, along Division Street in Wicker Park. This craft, art, design and DIY spectacular will run from 11am – 7pm each day + feature over 300 of today’s finest indie-crafter gypsies that travel from all over the nation for these historic events!

Be sure to stop on by and visit with team RTD. We'll be set up at booth #210 on the north side of Division Street near Wood (see pic of map below). The Renegade Craft Fair is always FREE TO ATTEND! Hope to see you and your human faces there!

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported East Side Community High School this week. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The response to this was rather overwhelming. I've received so many wonderful emails and positive responses to this effort. I can assure you that Mark and everyone else over at East Side High is eternally grateful and sends you their thanks as well.

As of right now I have a little over 400 prints to sign and ship out! And many many others also voted, but declined the offer. I'll get these all shipped off as soon as possible, but it will probably be two to three weeks before I'm able to do so. If you are in the Chicago area and would like to pick yours up at the Renegade Craft Fair (booth 210) I'll be attending September 11 + 12 you are more than welcome to do so.

Unfortunately this Kohl's Cares challenge looks like it will largely (maybe entirely) go to private schools that already have substantial budgets, huge endowments, and donors in place. And were able to market themselves the best (via free iPad incentives, helicopter rides, and paid advertising) with those budgets and not the schools that really could have benefited so profoundly with this money. This school can’t even afford new computers for themselves let alone give them away in exchange for votes like many of the leading schools are doing. A most unfortunate scenario and major oversight on Kohl's "strategic planning" for this campaign.

A really nice write up in the East Villager just came out and can be read here. It gives a great background on East Side Community High and all the noble issues that they stand for. I highly recommend checking it out. ESCH is a pretty special place.

I feel very fortunate to have discovered East Side Community High the way that I did. No matter what the outcome is, I’m proud to be able to say I was involved with their mission and extremely grateful to know that I'm connected to so many wonderful supporters. It only seemed right to start paying that forward when this little "happy interruption" entered my life, and I look forward to continuing to support ESCH in the future.

Giving Away My Work For Free!

I had the pleasure of sitting down and really getting to hear Mark Federman, the principle of East Side Community High School, speak passionately about education, the arts, his school, and most importantly near to his heart, his students. This guy is the real deal. He's been living out of a tent on the street in front of his school for over a week now to raise awareness for his school. All because of a promise that he made to his kids as a mentor and leader that they all look up to and admire. KOHL's is giving away ten million dollars that will be split up between 20 schools, each getting 500,000 and Mark really wants this for his. It's a voting game. Unfortunately they're on the low end of the technology spectrum(due to current funding) which makes promoting this cause all that more of an uphill battle against many of the private schools currently holding the top 20 positions. It would be really unfortunate to see all of these awards only go to privately funded schools and not deserving Title 1 schools like East Side High that really are desperately in need of a boost like this to change the lives of the students there permanently.

Mark and I spoke for about a half an hour, but it didn't take more than a few minutes to see the energy in Mark's eyes even though he'd only had three hours of sleep the night before. He introduced me to their current arts program and all of the things they currently pull off with a non-existing budget, including a full gallery that they do student exhibitions in for the community to help raise money for the arts. In fact, pretty much anything that is outside of the lean and stripped down "norm" has to be personally funded out of his own pocket and other teachers at the school. We both conversed on our passion for a solid balance of technology with the arts in the classroom. This money would help fund a new mac lab where his students can access the equipment they need for a proper introduction to the graphic arts, computer illustration, and video production. In addition to this he has a pretty extensive list filled with after school programming, some fine tuning, and just making the overall experience a better one for his students.

So here's whats up. I need you to vote for very a deserving school that really needs our help and has lit up many faces on a street nearby where I live. In exchange I'm going to give you my work for free. This will not cost you a penny (I'm covering shipping costs too). Only about 30 seconds of your time will be needed for the voting. Mark has literally been camping out and living in front of the school for the past week in order to raise awareness for the needs of his school and the students that walk it's hallways. His ambition and determination has inspired me. He's out there doing exactly what every person in a leadership role should be doing in their community. He's lit a flame in everyone around him, brought together the community with his students, faculty, and parents and given them all hope and a dream worth coming together for. Bottom line, it's always near and dear to my heart when I see someone that's willing to go the extra mile and show the world they care... especially when it's for the kids.

I realize that we are bombarded by proposals on the internet non stop which is why I understand the value of a little bribe in order to elicit action. So go vote for East Side Community High School in the KOHL's Cares For Kids contest on Facebook to help them realize this dream of winning $500,000 and I will ship you a print of your choice that is hand signed and dated completely for free to anywhere in the world.

Why am I doing this? I've got a few reasons.

1. I've walked by here at all hours over the past week and whether it's morning, afternoon, or night, this school's steps have been lit up with smiling faces and people who genuinely care about their futures. And that makes me care. I also had the opportunity to sit down with Mark Federman, the principle of East Side Community High, and listen to him passionately speak about how profoundly this money would benefit his students, especially in the arts and technology.

2. I'm just a sucker for people who give a damn. All great things that materialize start off as an idea. An idea that is then fueled with emotion, heart, and perseverance by someone who cares. East Side High is a perfect example of this. Let's give these kids the recognition they deserve and make believers out of each and every one of them that have volunteered their time for this cause.

3. It's in my best interest to care about this school because every afternoon these kids repopulate my neighborhood. And the better educated and well rounded they all are the better chance that the future of this area that I live in will be a positive and fulfilling environment for all.

4. I am still just plain fascinated by the power of the internet and humans. How the influence of a few can generate a tidal wave of reaction. And that just maybe, if I send this on to the people that I know and then they forward it on to there friends. A little public school in the East Village of NY, that caught my attention through a 7 year old volunteer with a blue flyer and a principal sleeping in a tent, can see this dream materialize. Something like this will be more profound than we could ever imagine for these students.

Utne Reader: Hunger

This was an illo done for the July/August issue of Utne Reader Magazine. The story was really sad, it takes the reader alongside the author while he describes what it's like living with progressive neuromuscular disability that advances to the point of no longer being able to swallow. As a result he is no longer able to eat or drink via traditional methods and is forced to take his nourishment through a stomach tube at night while he sleeps. The full story about his lust for food and the psychological impact that it has on him can be read over at Utne.com - LINK. This piece was a little darker than what I'm typically commissioned for, but I'm really glad Stephanie Glaros over at Utne gave me a shot at it.

Editorial Illustration for Baltimore Magazine

This was an editorial illustration done recently for Baltimore Magazine. The story was about the Southside, a rum-based summer drink very popular in country clubs throughout the Baltimore area. Particularly, Elkridge and Green Spring Valley clubs have a rivalry about who makes the better drink. The story examined the “war” between the two clubs discussing who's was best. I was told that the Elkridge drink has a greenish-glow to it, because all of the mint is completely muddled in the drink and the Green Spring is more golden because it has a tangy, lemon flavor (garnished with WHOLE mint leaves). Also both have a dash of arrogance in them too...

The main themes were the idea of exploration, problem solving, and often the necessity to see things from a different perspective for proper diagnosis within the nursing community. Johns Hopkins Magazine

This was a recent illustration done for Johns Hopkins Magazine. It was for an article discussing Johns Hopkins plans to cut their carbon footprint in half by making improvements to buildings that are considered “heavy breathers.” According to the article: a “heavy breather” is a building that takes in, conditions, and puts out large volumes of air—a form of respiration that consumes a lot of power and creates a disproportionate amount of carbon dioxide emissions. It's that time again! Just one week away from the annual Renegade Craft Fair Brooklyn!

Bring your eyeballs and come gawk at awesome stuff for two whole days! The 6th Annual Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn will be held on June 5 + 6, 2010, in Williamsburg’s beautiful McCarren Park. This craft, art, design and DIY spectacular will run from 11am – 7pm each day + feature over 250 of today’s finest indie-craft talents from all over the nation!

BUST Spring Craftacular - DO IT!

The tag line for this famed indie market hosted by Bust magazine is “anything but your grandma’s craft fair,” and when more than 50 awesome vendors invade Greenpoint, it will once again live up to its rep. -Time Out New York Mag

RTD will be set up at table #18 in the middle, so get off the couch and come hang out with a bunch of other humans that like cool stuff this Sunday. In addition to all the artists/designers, there will be eats, drinks, djs, dance-offs, and more. So ditch the remote for a couple hours and come play.

RTD, ArtStar, and BUST

Had a blast this past weekend in Philadelphia at The 2010 Art Star Craft Bazaar. Met lot's of new folks and made a bunch of new friends in Philadelphia. The weather was awesome and the show was set up at Penn's Landing right on the Delaware River. Tons of live music and great artists/crafters displaying their eye candy. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and showed some love to RTD!

Big props to RTD's new Etsy friends Kimm and Lisa that shared the van ride down and back from NYC too! Both are super rad ladies that make beautiful things and laugh at RTD when he tries to be funny. I also had the pleasure of being next to the awesome Valerie Mayen who heads up Yellowcake and not only makes great stuff, but also tosses up 10% of her sales to local charity. RTD likes.

RTD received his copy of 3x3 Magazine yesterday, as he turned to page 5, Greetings From Mr. Bird stared back at him with a twinkle in his eye. What an awesome little surprise! Stephanie Glaros, from Utne Reader Magazine, was this months art director interview for 3x3 Mag. Four illustrations from past Utne issues were featured with the interview and Greetings From Mr. Bird just so happened to be one of them. RTD’s had the pleasure of working with Steph on multiple occasions in the past and feels honored to be recognized in the same article with her. Steph is an amazing art director and an incredible supporter of the illustration world. We are all very lucky to have in our community. Check out the article in issue 14 of 3x3 Magazine too!

STL Magazine: Women’s Health Series

These were a couple illustrations that were done for the April issue of St. Louis Magazine. The first, Dieting By Disposition, was an article on how to lose weight without losing your mind. SLM asked dietitians and a personal trainer to reveal some common diet personality types, and then suggest food plans and exercises tailored to each. The second article, Walking the Walk, focuses on the health benefits of walking, and explains the “right” ways to walk for optimal fitness.

St. Louis Artists’ Guild to host Indie Craft Revolution an Indie Art and Craft Market organized by the St. Louis Craft Mafia.

Indie Craft Revolution: A craft event in a series of Indy Art and Craft events hosted by St. Louis Craft Mafia. Indie Craft Revolution will be on Saturday, March 13th 10 am to 6pm and Sunday, March 14th from 10 am to 4 pm.

The St. Louis Craft Mafia is teaming up with partners such as SCORCH, RFT, PASTE, Yelp, Funky Finds and Well Body Acupuncture and Chiropractic to make this event a reality. This show aims to provide St. Louis with well made, handmade and interesting items.

Time Out NY Kids { IF: Focused }

This was an interesting assignment that is currently in the January issue of Time Out New York Kids. It was an article on breastfeeding, and this was part of the initial brief for the project... "We want to focus on the boobs and the babies expression. They're the most important elements." As a result, the baby ended up being quite focused on those mystical, and anatomical wonders. Everyday really is a new adventure in this profession :) Enjoy.

New Illustrations done for 417 Magazine

November: Confusion in Aisle Nine
This was an interesting topic, a new service giving grocery shoppers access to Aisle 411. This new feature lets customers call for a sort of grocery store version of directory assistance to help find their missing ingredient. They are able to call in the grocery item and then seconds later they receive the location coordinates within the store. Springfield was the first city in the world to use the service, which debuted last October at the 65 Price Cutter at National Avenue and Republic Road.

December: And the Emmy Goes to…
This illo was done for the Emmy that the Springfield news reporter, Joy Robertson took home for 2009. The one she took home was: A Mid-American Emmy. It was given to her for her work on a two-part series about midwives, called “Birthing Up Baby.” Congratulations Joy :)

January: Efficient Roads
This illo was for a new interchange that was being referred to as one of the most powerful and greenest innovations of 2009. The interchange, called a diverging diamond, was the first of its kind in the United States. The new overpass leads drivers on a path that—while it is quick and easy once you get the hang of it—sends them driving on the left side of the road, a first for most American motorists. The diverging diamond allows more than twice as many left turns per hour than most interchanges—a total of about 600 turns. Nice work Springfield...keep on, keepin' it green.

American Airlines | American Way: Lost In Translation

If you're heading to the skies with American Airlines anytime soon check out your in-flight copy of American Way (bi-monthly) magazine. This was an illo done for the January 15th issue on an article about an aspiring novelist's journey to getting his first novel published - Catch a Fallen Star. After repeated attempts with his own agent he ultimately had to settle for having his life's dream published in Poland — in a language that he couldn't understand. Utne Reader: Why Do I Get So Lost?

This was a half page illo that was done for the current Jan/Feb issue over at Utne Reader. The story was about a woman who can't make and store accurate mental images of her environment, otherwise know as “developmental topographical disorientation” by the journal Neuropsychologia. WOW...what a year it's been! Just wanted to take a moment to send out my sincerest "Thank You" to everyone for being a part of this journey with me. It truly would not be possible to be where I am and doing what I do with out the incredible support and constant encouragement that I continue to receive from all of you.

It really is hard to believe that just a little over two years ago I was arriving in this big city. I set out from St. Charles, MO on a cold November afternoon waving goodbye to my amazing family and looking onward to the complete unknown that lay before me.

The drive was made all the way from MO to NYC in a little under a day and I arrived at my first sublet with a couple suitcases, computer dangling at my side...and not a clue as to what I was actually going to do now that I was here.

After a year of experimenting with and reigniting my love for illustration things finally began to take off. Illo gigs have been comin' in steadily this year, The Quirkles (science experiments for kids) children's book series continues to grow, and rent has finally become manageable :)

I worked and traveled to dozens of art/craft/handmade shows selling RTD prints to people from all over the world this past year and I can't even begin to count all of the incredible people that I've met along the way that have influenced me positively during this journey.

I'm looking forward to the adventures that lay within 2010, and sharing those experiences with all of you. Have a wonderful holiday season this year!

Tax Resource for Freelancers

I often get asked by other artists/freelancers about tax resources and if I have any recommendations for them. As RTD is compiling year end #'s and preparing to pay out good ol' Uncle Sam his final installment, it felt fitting to do a little link dropping too. RTD's go to resource for everything tax, and NYC tax related. MEDOWS CPA has been great during RTD's transition from St. Louis to New York City and is highly recommended to anyone currently searching for their own CPA.
